Should Christian Parents Insert Cochlear Implants Into Their Deaf Child?

The biblical answer may be surprising to the Christian parents because it is actually a resounding "no." You probably asked yourself, "Why did God give me a deaf child?" or "What did we do wrong to have a deaf child?" I would like to encourage you warmly to prayerfully search the Bible for answers. It could be one of the most important decisions for you to make in your deaf child’s life.

The most important question the Christian parents should ask themselves is, "Who made the deafness in the first place?" It’s God, and it is in the answer God gave to Moses in Exodus 4:11, "And the LORD said unto him, who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?" Some Christian parents may feel devastated when they discover that their precious baby is deaf. They may react to this unpleasant news with despair and by expecting the worst. By thinking the worst, they may view the deafness as a curse or judgment from God. The disciples asked Jesus the very same question that I’m sure some Christian parents are asking themselves in John 9:2-3, "And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind.
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." From these verses, Christian parents should try to understand deafness from a biblical viewpoint, not evolutionistic viewpoint.

God gave you a Deaf child for His special reasons. Everyone has a purpose on this world according to the Providence of God. Evolutionistic teachings of "weak shall perish" and "fittest of the survival" should not be part of Christian parents’ thought when looking at their deaf child. According to Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." A deaf child is still special in God’s eyes because he is God’s creation. Your Deaf child is unique and exceptional. Despite his deafness, nothing will diminish the cherished role your Deaf child will play in your life from this time forward.

The cochlear implants look like an almost magical solution that will greatly appeal to Christian parents of a deaf child. After feeling dejected, this probably looks like a cure-all for your anxieties. This is a deceptive illusion and one that Christian parents should guard their hearts against more carefully. Cochlear implants are a great scientific tool in our modern times. Nevertheless, the main problem with this method is the philosophy behind it.

The advocates of cochlear implants have presented itself as a way to cure deafness. They promise you that your deaf child can be ‘normal’ again. Your deaf child can hear just like every other hearing child. Your deaf child can learn to speak normally. Your deaf child will be a happy child. It is like telling God, "We really wanted our child to be normal just like the other hearing children." Your deaf child will receive a bad impression that his deafness is abnormal and should be treated like a crippling disability, when it is not so. Cochlear implants cannot cure a Deaf child, nor will it ever make him a ‘hearing’ child.

Many advocates of cochlear implants intend to minimize some risks and facts associated with installing cochlear implants on deaf children. Christian parents should be aware of some important facts before deciding their Deaf children to have cochlear implants. There are more risks & facts available, but a few examples below:

  • Some of implants may fail, and it will require additional surgeries, which will expose a Deaf child to the unnecessary risks of surgeries.
  • A Deaf child with cochlear implants cannot undergo MRI; this will put his future health at great risk. (Example: cancer or severe injuries).
  • They are usually expensive and cannot guarantee complete success.
  • Even with the implants, a Deaf child would have to attend several sessions of speech therapy every week. Despite spending most of their childhood in speech therapy, they still do lag behind in picking up new vocabularies and language development.
  • Few successful cases do not mean other many cases will be successful, and that is what fooled so many parents, including some Christian parents.

God has a better plan for the Deaf people whom He loves very much. He creates sufficient opportunities and avenues for the Deaf people to succeed just like the hearing people. Providentially, God gave the Deaf people a beautiful language, American Sign Language (ASL). Deaf people do function normally just like hearing people, because they have their own language and culture. [Click on ASL & Deaf Culture for more information]

In fact, the advocates of cochlear implants discourage parents from allowing their Deaf child to use ASL. It robs a Deaf child of the surest way to communicate with the rest of world. It isolates a Deaf child unnecessarily from the world and relegates him as a permanently disabled child. This is an evolutionistic view of the deaf child rather than a biblical view.

The answer for Christian parents is available, but not in speech therapists, doctors, and all others who stand to profit from the cochlear implants business. The answer is and has always been in the Bible, so are you willing to open it and discover God's will for your deaf child in there? [Click on Loving Your Deaf Child for more information]
